Microsoft released Beta of Windows 7

You may have heard already that Microsoft released a Beta version of Windows 7. The download is available to everyone. It can be dowloaded up until early July and then used for 12 month. I quite like the idea. You get an impression of the new features and what Redmond has learned from Vistas failure.

The main problem with Vista was that one didn’t know if the old software will still work. That not only stopped people like you and me from buying it; much worse it stopped pretty much every big company in the world from switching to the latest Windows. With Windows 7 everything will be better or so they say.

After you downloaded the Install file you will need a blank DVD. It comes as an ISO file and you will have to burn an install DVD in order to proceed. These days this should not be a problem.

The requirements for Windows 7 are minimal, another lesson they have learned from Vistas failure.

• 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
• 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
• DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

It was designed so it could run even on Netbooks. Microsoft presume that this will be one of the battlegrounds of the future and they are right. How well this is going to work only future can tell. What we can state already is that the operating system will run on pretty much every PC out there and with out any problems. When you install Windows 7 your first impression will be hat it is sleek. They got that bit right.

One of the most anticipated new features is the support for touch screens. Much more interesting for me however is the support for old XP software. How well this works will decide if Windows 7 is going to be a success or not.

Since this feature was not part of the first Beta we will have to wait for the next candidate. It should be available any time soon. I shall report once the updated version is released.

You are right. By the time I published the post it was available and it is working fine. A pitty only that it most likely won’t be part of the “regular” edition of windows 7 but only the rather expensive ultimate edition.
